Thurston's Lava Tube
There are lava tubes all over Hawaii and many of them have been destroyed in the normal development process. Hilo has made an effort to preserve them especially the ones used as burial grounds for the Native Hawaiians.
I learned a lot about volcanoes on this tour (it was a volcano tour). Volcano tubes form when the top of the lave flow solidified but the center continues to be liquid and flows down hill. They play a huge part in Native Hawaiian myth and legends but are pretty boring to photograph.
One shot is of us entering the tube and the other is one of the macro shots I took of the wall next to the bus while waiting for everyone else to show up. A Macro lens is a great way to keep yourself occupied.
