A Saturday Stroll

The nice thing about Brooklyn is that you can always discover new places. We had brunch as Stan's Place on Atlantic, a homey, New Orleans' style spot, and then walked home. But not after visiting the most useless yarn store on the planet. I won't rant but what good are you if you can't help out a novice knitter trying to make a nice baby blanket?

Anywho... There is a stretch of Atlantic Ave that has cute Victorian storefront after storefront. The whole area is quaint and charming, especially in the snow. It almost feels like a theme park for historical houses and quaintness. (Actually many areas of Brooklyn feel like some sort of showpiece for a certain lifestyle: williamsburg for hispterdom, Park Slope for yuppieville, and this area for quaint, oldey-timey town). I don't mind one bit, it's lovely especially in the snow with all of the holiday decorations still up.

As we walked towards Park Slope, we ran into the industrial fringes of Gowanus and a mix of fixed up and decaying wood frame houses. On one hand you're excited to see stuff like this:

Old, decaying houses that ooze character.

On the other hand, you see stuff like this that makes no sense at all:

My initial response is one of pure horror but I also know that some of these monstrosities are going into vacant lots or old industrial spaces. I don't know about this one but it is just as likely that this is going into a vacant lot as that someone tore down a historic church or brownstone to build it.

No matter what the finish there is no way it is going to fit into the neighborhood.

So here are two images that I liked: a beat up "Beautiful Brooklyn" sign on a church.

An a pup very excited about a walk in the snow.
